Occasionally, we put in some serious walking during Mass.  This Saturday evening was one of those times.  Sam, being two years old, sometimes just needs to walk and experience the Mass in a different way.  So we make the liturgy a journey.

During the service I was struck, really struck by part of the Liturgy of the Eucharist – the part where we pray “Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed.”  Think about that for a second…  I don’t know about you, but my weaknesses are pretty weak.  To think, ultimately, to believe, that there is any power in the universe that could wipe away all that makes me “unworthy”, with a word and nothing else – that’s pretty intense.

But as I reflected on this more, it occurs to me that the work we do in the world, on ourselves, with our children; is never about perfection, or worthiness per se.  I mean strictly speaking, no one is ever going to be worthy of what we understand Jesus – the Eucharist – to be.  Rather than thinking that G-d waves some kind of a magic wand, or breathes magic dust on us and changes us; I think he makes each of us worthy for our work in this world, and matches the definition of worthy to who each of us is.  This is not to say that sinners should just go on sinning – G-d made special rules just for each of us.  This is to say that we are worthy of what He put us here for, and we are worthy for it because He says so with our very existence.

Fascinating.
